#39 in the Central Book, May 27, 2010; Easy — 5.6 miles round-trip, 500ft elevation
I (Becky) did this one by myself during a trip to La Pine, Oregon. I hadn’t been to Central Oregon in the spring before and was loving just how gorgeous everything was. From my drive down from Washougal to my two hikes, I just kept being surprised over and over at the loveliness around me.
There are 3 hikes listed in the book for this area, I chose the middle, the one to McKay Crossing. This trail began at the lower end of the creek trail, at the Ogden Group Camp.
The path gradually wends upwards, following the delightful Paulina Creek.
At the 2.8 mark you’ll reach a twisting rock gorge and waterfall, just before the McKay Crossing Campground. I had my picnic lunch here and for the adventure portion, managed to sit awfully close to the ledge and nearly knocked my lunch into the drink. This is the turnaround point for the 5.6 mile option.
Notes: Open year-round. Great for children and dogs. The trail is shared with horses and mountain bikes.
